A couple of weeks ago I was minding my own business hanging out at the coolest coffehouse in the world, Bongo Java, home of the world famous Nun Bun. The Songwriter Survival Night was about to start as I watched all type flow into the place. Well, out of nowhere, Bob, the owner, asked me if I wanted to judge the contest. "Why not?," I thought. There were two other judges and one of them already had dibs on being "Simon". Well, as the contest progressed it became clear that I was Simon. All those poor struggling songwriters I gave 3's and 5's to! A part of me feels bad but the other part thinks its better they found out now. One judge was definitely playing the "Paula" part and gave everybody - no matter how bad - 8's or 9's. The winner played 3 really great songs. He was the dark horse from the first song though but I gave him really high scores 'cause I knew he was good.
Yesterday I got an email saying that I had been chosen to compete in the contest. Well... I thought long and hard about it and decided to pass on to someone else. I mean, after all I was a judge on the first night. I told Bob it wouldn't look very good for him or for me. He didn't agree but I passed anyway. I figured I didn't need any of the prizes if I won anyway. One prize is some web/hosting services from a competitor!
I got an email from Mark Slaughter from the early 90's hair metal band, Slaughter last week. He seemed interested in possibly producing the band but I haven't heard anything from him since. It's a good story anyway!
It looks like The Highschool Song will be prominently featured in July on a popular underground compilation CD in the UK by Changes One. More on that later as details emerge.
I have my new web design site up geared toward musicians. Check it out: Rock-n-Roll-Design.com.
